TravelChoice logoTravelChoice is an innovative new program to reduce single occupancy vehicle trips that is coordinated by TransForm. Currently, TravelChoice is working on Phase 2 of an 18-month outreach program.

About TravelChoice

TravelChoice provides households with personalized transportation information with the goal of reducing solo driving trips by increasing transit usage, biking, and walking. The program is modeled after numerous successful projects in the United States and abroad, and was one of the new initiatives in TransForm's 2005-2008 Strategic Plan.

TravelChoice 2007-2008

TravelChoice 2007-2008 is a three phase project encompassing over 16,500 households in Berkeley and 9,000 households in San Leandro. The entire project is funded by by Measure B (ACTIA), the Transportation Fund for Clean Air, the City of Berkeley and project partners AC Transit and BART.

  • Phase 1-Berkeley (Completed December 2007): Over 7,500 households in Berkeley's South and West neighborhoods were contacted between September and November. Survey work for effectiveness will continue into the spring of 2008.
  • Phase 2-Berkeley (spring 2008): A second Berkeley phase with outreach to North Berkeley and Neighborhoods along San Pablo Ave (north of Dwight). Outreach canvassing will begin in April.
  • Phase 3-San Leandro (fall 2008): The San Leandro outreach will begin in September and focus on 9,000 households in the neighborhoods surrounding San Leandro BART and Downtown San Leandro.

TravelChoice 2006

Funding for the initial TravelChoice pilot project is provided by the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency, The Transportation Fund for Clean Air, AC Transit, BART, Water Transit Authority, TransForm and the cities of Alameda and Oakland.

  • Phase 1-Alameda: Conducted in spring 2006, TravelChoice Alameda contacted 4,500 households and achieved a 14% reduction in drive-alone trips. Read more in this white paper (200k PDF file).
  • Phase 2-Fruitvale: In the summer of 2006, the second TravelChoice phase provided bilingual outreach in Oakland's Fruitvale district to over 3,000 households.
